Paul's HappyBird

Atari 2600 (VCS) · 2023 · by Bruno Steux

Paul's HappyBird is an open-source homebrew game created by Bruno Steux in 2023 for the Atari 2600. Distributed under the GPL-3.0 license, the title is notable for being written entirely in C using the specialized cc2600 cross-compiler, targeting both NTSC and PAL television formats. Players control a small bird in continuous horizontal flight inspired by the Flappy genre. Each input pulse lifts the character slightly against gravity, requiring precise timing to navigate narrow gaps between incoming pipe barriers. Colliding with any obstacle or the ground ends the run immediately. As a free, open-source project, the complete game can be played freely across modern emulators and vintage hardware alike.
